It makes sense that these individuals are thought of as world-changers. They’ve invented or improved upon everyday things that have had a lasting impact on us all.
Now, think about who has changed YOUR world?
If you were to make a list, it might include a parent, a teacher, a boss, or maybe even a religious leader. These types of people hold places in our lives that position them for great opportunities to influence.
But what about you? Would anyone name you as someone who has influenced his or her life?
If not, why not?
5 Reasons You May Think You Can’t Change The World
“I’ve got nothing to offer.”
The truth is, there are many good things – and maybe a few not so good things – that make up who you are. So you’ve got something – and you can use your life experiences to help someone else.
“I’m not really that interesting.”
The good news is that influencing others is not about you. It’s about them. You influence others by focusing on their story – not yours.
“I’m not super successful.”
Your level of success has nothing to do with your ability to listen. Many people are seeking influencers who they can simply talk to, and who will share a different perspective.
“I’ve got some skeletons in my closet.”
Failure makes you human. There’s someone out there who can relate to – and learn from – your failures. So can you.
“Nobody has ever asked me to be a mentor or influencer in their life.”
Then your first opportunity is ready for you! Don’t wait for someone to ask you to speak into his or her life. Most likely, the people who have influenced you the most weren’t invited to do so.

Interns are a great source for new hires. They know the company and the company knows them. Even if the intern isn’t currently interested in a position, they might have friends who are looking for a new opportunity.

As employers are faced with a candidate-driven job market, building and maintaining a positive working relationship with interns will be an important part of their recruiting strategy. A couple of years ago, Kronos shared with us the secrets to an award-winning internship program. It’s a great read, I hope you’ll check it out. One of the key activities was staying in touch with interns.
But how do you do that? Send postcards or regular emails? Both of those are possible but the real way to stay connected is by creating an experience that bonds the interns and the company. Something everyone will talk about. Something interns might even want to visit (post-internship).
In the past, Kronos has held their own Intern Kronolympics. This year, Kronos decided to kick it up a notch and invited five fellow Greater Boston technology companies to hold the inaugural Summer Games: Battle of the Interns. It’s a day of competition and networking for organizations and individuals focused on innovation, technology and leadership. In watching the video, it was a day of hard work pure fun.

I asked Aron Ain, chief executive officer at Kronos, what prompted them to host the event. “Parents, families, teachers, and schools all play a critical role in shaping the workforce of the future – but I believe employers should also play a major part by offering resources, mentors, and events such as The Summer Games: Battle of the Interns that inspire and motivate young minds. I’m so proud of how our own growing internship and co-op programs are helping build the leaders of tomorrow, and we have gained just as much value from our college and high school colleagues than they have from Kronos.”
While the goal was to give interns an event they’ll never forget – and I think Kronos was very successful in doing that – they also accomplished a couple other things.
Industry Connections: The Mass Technology Leadership Council (MassTLC), the region’s leading technology association, offered volunteers to help with the event. This provided interns with the opportunity to connect with a professional association that can help to advance their career.
Networking: After the games, the interns, company employees and volunteers were able to celebrate and network. Just think – next year’s networking event is a perfect opportunity to invite former interns. They can share stories and stay connected with the industry.
The goal of an internship program is to provide young professionals with an opportunity to experience the industry they’ve chosen. It’s to give them a chance to gain some work experience. That doesn’t mean you can’t have a little whole lot of fun along the way. In fact, maybe one of the best things you can teach interns is the importance of working hard and playing hard.

If you’re interested in learning more about WordPress, you should see if your city is hosting a local WordCamp event.

This year, one of the speakers focused his session on how to manage expectations. Steve Zehngut is the founder of Zeek.com, a consultancy dedicated to building software solutions. While I was listening to his session, I realized that the information he was sharing about managing expectations didn’t only apply to software project management. It applies any time we are trying to manage expectations in the workplace.
Managing expectations isn’t easy. In the business world, we need to communicate with others all day every day about the things we’re prepared to do (and not do.) We have to communicate with others the consequences of behavior (or non-behavior.) Steve shared his list for managing expectations and I wanted to share it with you. I loved that it was titled “A whole bunch of words that end with the letter Y”:

Honesty means that we reveal the truth when it comes to setting expectations. It might be tempting to concoct some little white lie to push back a deadline, but honesty is better. Accountability demands honesty.
Transparency is related to honesty but it’s defined as revealing information so others can see the truth. I really liked the distinction between honesty and transparency – and how they can work together to build credibility and integrity.
Integrity happens when we become a trusted advisor and/or colleague. This gives us the ability to manage expectations more effectively because the person we’re communicating with believes our message.
Accountability is defined as taking responsibility for our actions. And not just ours, but the organizations we work for. We simply can’t say, “I didn’t do it.” When the reality is – maybe the company did do it.
Consistency translates into being a person of your word. Every. Single. Time.
Vulnerability is necessary because none of us is perfect. We have to be prepared to admit mistakes, making apologies, and work toward finding solutions.

NUMBER 7. The last one Steve mentioned was Respect. And he set it up by saying it’s the one word on the list that doesn’t end in “Y.” But that’s not true. I viewed respect as a twofer. Respectability is the quality of being socially acceptable. If others do not find us respectable, it’s kind hard to do items 1-6 above. It’s also important to deliver any expectations respectfully. We can’t wait until we’re completely exasperated with the situation to convey expectations.
Regardless of our position, managing expectations is an important part of what we do every single day. Incorporating a whole bunch of things that end with the letter Y could help avoid a whole bunch of conversations that end with the question “Why?”
